National Skills Competition Final 2026

The 2026 National Skills Competition final successfully concluded between 30 September and 2 October 2026 at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg, Gauteng. The event served as the pinnacle of a nationwide pipeline that engaged more than 17,000 learners, culminating in a national final featuring 151 top-tier technical learners and 77 specialist educators representing all nine provinces across 11 core technical trade specialisations.

A. Scope and Responsibility

As the appointed project advisory firm, LdeK Consulting Pty Ltd was contracted to oversee end-to-end task moderation, internal logistics, quality assurance, operational control, compliance coordination, and multi-stakeholder engagement. We also provided supervisory support across all nine technical specialisations and the Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) subject field, while managing the technical subject groups to ensure that skills assessments strictly aligned with established industrial standards.

B. Infrastructure & Technical Trade Setup

LdeK Consulting was responsible for strict quality control, spatial layouts, procurement, and tool deployment for all 11 technical specialisations across the live evaluation floors:

  • Mechanical & Automotive: Automotive Technology, Fitting and Machining, and Welding & Metalwork.
  • Electrical & Digital: Digital Systems, Electronics, and Electrical Power Systems.
  • Civil & Construction: Plumbing (Civil Services), Woodworking, and Construction.
  • Design & Graphics: Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD).

Our role required close coordination with technical training sponsors—including the Artisan Training Institute (ATI), Modena Design Centres (Autodesk technology provisions), and Resolution Circle—to guarantee that every station met rigorous industrial safety and mechanical compliance standards.

LdeK Consulting oversaw the compilation of results and the final validation of winners across all subject categories. Furthermore, we compiled a statistical technical report outlining operational successes, challenges, and critical recommendations to assist the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in elevating technical school standards moving forward. This comprehensive review evaluated logistics, moderator tasks, and infrastructure. To provide deeper insight, LdeK Consulting attached an addendum report that meticulously analysed specific technical data and proposed structural improvements. All final reports have been formally presented to the Sasol Foundation management team.

C. Logistics, Hospitality, and Event Operations

Operating from the primary hub in Gauteng, LdeK Consulting's logistics unit reports the following operational outcomes:

  • Sasol Foundation & Kagiso Trust Coordination: Managed local transport, accommodation, and catering frameworks for all provincial learner delegates and accompanying educators travelling into Gauteng.
  • Vetting & Onboarding: Processed regional qualifiers into the final draw registry in close conjunction with the event organizers, IDNA.
  • Awards Ceremony Management: Directed the final prize-giving ceremony in cooperation with IDNA and Basic Education Minister, Ms. Siviwe Gwarube, facilitating the seamless distribution of technical toolboxes, drawing apparatus, online course vouchers, and institutional recognitions.

Strategic Outlook and Recommendations

From the perspective of LdeK Consulting, the 2026 iteration marks a major milestone in elevating technical vocations above historical academic stigmas. The expansion from regional pilots into a fully comprehensive national framework demonstrates strong structural execution.

Moving forward, LdeK Consulting notes with appreciation that the project successfully achieved all strategic key performance indicators (KPIs) set out by the Sasol Foundation, Kagiso Trust, and the DBE.
